Professor Leon Flicker

Professor Leon Flicker In 1998 Professor Leon Flicker became the inaugural Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Western Australia. He has since reorganised the undergraduate and postgraduate program in geriatric medicine and remains an active clinician, including being the head of the Inner-City Geriatric Team. In 2006, he became the inaugural Executive Director of the Western Australian Centre for Health and Ageing which seeks to promote cutting edge translational research into the heath needs of older people.

Professor Flicker’s research interests have focused on the use of observational and treatment studies to elucidate the causes and prevention of the common medical conditions of older people and their subsequent disability. Particular research interests have been the in the areas of dementia, cognitive impairment, falls and fractures. He was a member of the NHMRC discipline panel covering Geriatrics and Gerontology for the period 2001-2003, on the Clinical Assessing Committee of the New Zealand Health Research Council for 2005, Chair of the Discipline panel convering Nursing and Geriatric in 2006 and is a member of Healthway’s Research Subcommittee. He is a member of the Editorial Boards for The Cochrane Dementia and Cognitive Improvement Group, Internal Medicine Journal and the Australasian Journal on Ageing. He reviews numerous articles for journals and in the last 12 months has reviewed gerontological papers for JAMA, JAGS, Age and Ageing, Stroke, MJA and others.
He has been a frequent and vocal advocate for the needs of older people and for the development of appropriate health services.

He has chaired the Clinical Reference Group for the AHMAC Health Care of Older Australians Standing Committee for the last 5 years. He was the President of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine (ANZSGM) and is a member of the Executive for the State Branches of the Australian Association of Gerontology and ANZSGM.  He is a member of the WA Aged Care Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Medical and Scientific Committee of Osteoporosis Australia and the research committee of Alzheimers Australia.
