Paul Norman is a Vascular Surgeon and Professor in the School of Surgery at the University of Western Australia. He has been the Chief Investigator of the NHMRC-funded Western Australian Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Trial (1996-2001) and the follow-up Health In Men Study (2001-2008). The screening trial is one of the largest randomised controlled trials ever undertaken in Australia (n=41,000). The results have recently been published in the BMJ and were used by the United States Preventive Services Task Force in their 2005 review of screening for aneurysms.
The follow-up Health In Men Study involves continuing follow-up of the 12,203 men who attended for AAA screening and encompasses all aspects of medical and psychosocial health in older men. In addition to the wealth of clinical and psychosocial data held by HIMS, samples of sera, plasma and DNA have been collected and archived for a subset of 4,250 participants. Other active areas of research include the pathogenesis of AAA and the epidemiology of peripheral vascular disease.
This project is funded by an ARC/NHMRC Ageing Well, Ageing Productively Strategic Award.
